A Summer Serenade
Our Summer Concert will be on 22nd June at St Mary's Church in Stafford.
Beethoven - 'Egmont' Overture
Mozart - Piano Concert No. 19 (K.459)
Brahms - Serenade No. 1 (Op. 11)
We are thrilled to be playing in this beautiful venue once again this year, and will open the concert with Beethoven’s powerful and expressive ‘Egmont’ Overture. Composed in 1809-10 as the opening of a set of incidental music that Beethoven wrote for a play of the same name by Goethe, the overture was part of a new trend towards programmatic overtures and encompasses trials, tribulations, tragedy and triumph, all within 10 minutes!
Our guest soloist, Robert Thompson, will be performing Mozart’s Piano Concerto No. 19 in F major (K.459). Robert has performed with us several times over the years, and we are delighted to welcome him back. Piano Concerto No. 19 was written in 1784 for Mozart to play himself, and requires both technical prowess and a light touch. It exudes confidence, combining grace and vigour from its intricate yet sturdy opening, through its pastoral central movement, to its spectacular contrapuntal finale.
Brahms’ Serenade No. 1 in D major (Op 11), completed in 1859, was the composer’s first major orchestral work, and is a symphony in all but name. Brahms adopted a Neoclassical style reminiscent of earlier small-orchestra works such as those by Mozart, Haydn and Beethoven, but did not lose sight of his own Romantic sensibilities, imbuing the Serenade with emotion and bold expressiveness.
We are looking forward to performing this exciting repertoire, and hope you can join us for what promises to be an enjoyable evening.
Admission price is £9.00, including refreshments, payable on the door; children accompanied by an adult are free of charge.
